A partner for sustainable urban development

Who we are

Development Workshop (DW) is an NGO that was founded in 1975. DW’s interventions focus on human settlements and urban development, operating in southern Africa since the early 1980s

DW has been operating in Namibia since 2016 and was registered in Zambia as an NGO in 2022. The aim in Zambia is to support national development goals on housing, urban infrastructure and early childhood development (ECD). DW-Zambia is building on the successes of the same programmes in Namibia.

Our first ECD activities are being implemented in Lusaka, Luapula and Western Province. ECD centre mapping projects show the location of ECD centres (Kindergartens) in informal settlements. GIS mapping of informal settlement growth indicate how fast these settlements are growing in Zambia.

We are part of a worldwide network of Development Workshop (DW) organisations such as Development Workshop Angola, but independent in terms of governance, management and finances. Development Workshop was founded in 1975 by three architectural students in the UK with the objective to improve the lives and livelihoods of poor and disadvantaged communities with a specific focus on human settlements. Over the last 40 years, DW organisations have implemented many award-winning and successful programmes in over 30 countries in Africa, Asia and the Americas.
